As television specials air and journalists report the latest news, American's find themselves asking what they can do to help. The crucial reality is that every person can make a difference.
Every ounce of time and energy a person puts forth, they will be rewarded tenfold with the satisfaction of knowing they helped the advancement of humanity.
There are several charities and organizations that are dedicated to helping the famine stricken communities of Ethiopia. But besides donating to charities, what can a person do?
The ONE campaign is a world vision for reducing the spread of Aids and for ultimately ending poverty, therefore reducing famine. People work together as ONE to make a difference. Their campaign slogan tells the ultimate goal: "One person, one voice, one vote at a time - to make a better, safe world for all."
Become a world vision intern or volunteer:
The ONE campaign has many ways in which it combats famine. The campaign asks for volunteers or interns to help assist in the world vision goal. There are regional offices in nine different states within the US and their programs extend to several communities within the area. The World Vision branches all work together for a common goal of helping those in need in poverty stricken countries however, it also works to help families and children who are "at-risk" right at home within that state. Most of the extended programs work closely with churches and national development groups to extend their influence.
Sponsor a child:
World Vision has a sponsor a child program. This program allows individuals to donate thirty dollars a month to a specific child in need. Each person is given the basic information about their child: name, age, grade, country, chores, hobbies, and their basic health level. You will receive a picture of your child as well monthly letters. Currently there are over .5 million sponsors within the US. The thirty dollars that you provide your child with will buy them clothing, food, clean water, education and much more. You can change a child's life for just thirty dollars a month.

The thirty hour famine:
The thirty hour famine is a worldwide event in which teenagers don't eat for thirty hours to directly experience the effects of starvation. There are three dates set, "National famine dates" in which more than half a million teenagers don't eat for thirty hours. If participating in the famine, there is a national event center where you can take part in community service activities or educational projects during you thirty hours, to raise you awareness, as well as others, on the famine crisis.
