In
the beginning there was nothing but a sea that was a god called Nun. Out of Nun
rose an egg this egg was the all powerful Re (or Ra) . His power was in his secret name which only he knew. Re
is the sun.
When
he spoke other names the names became a being. Re was Khepera when the sun rose,
Re during the day, and Tem when the sun set. He said the names: shu and the wind
began to blow, Geb and the earth appeared, Nut the arching sky over earth, and
then Hapi then the Nile river began to flow.
Then
Re named everything on earth including humans. Re could take any form or shape.
Re became the first pharaoh of Egypt. Re rained over Egypt for thousands of
years and his body became old and weak. Humans
stopped obeying his law and started to mock and torment Re.
Re called a meeting
of: Shu, Tefnut, Geb, Nut, and Nun. He asked them how he should deal with his
problem. Nun spoke ”My son turn your glance upon the humans in the form of
your daughter Sekhmet”. So the fierce Sekhmet was created. She rejoiced while
slaughtering those who disobeyed Re. The lioness goddess’s greatest pleasure
came from drinking the blood of the ones who she slaughtered.
Re
felt pity for the humans and decided to stop Sekhmet but even he didn’t have
the power to stop her bidding. so he went to the humans and sent their fastest
men to the island of
Elephantine the get red ochre
(an earthy usually red or yellow and often impure iron ore used as a pigment www.webster.com).
When they returned the women had been brewing beer all day. The men dyed the
beer in all seven thousand jars.
Then
During the night the villagers poured the beer in the place where Sekhmet
pledged to hunt in the morning.
the
next day Sekhmet saw the red beer and thought it was the blood of people she had
slain. So, she began to drink, and drink and drink. When she was barley able to
stand Re summoned her. Since by the time she got to Re no one had died all day,
Re changed he name to “Hathor, the peaceful.”
Re
was then ruler of Egypt and he grew unintelligent as a man even began to drool.
One day Isis, daughter of Geb and Nut, picked up his drool and shaped it like
clay. The drool became the very first cobra. Isis Placed the cobra between the
north and south Egypt, where Re crosses the kingdoms everyday.
On
Re’s daily trek over Egypt the cobra came up and bit him. The poison surged
through his body and he let out a great scream. All the gods and goddesses came
to him unable to help. He called for Isis and asked for her help. She told him
she needed to know his name. He spoke all his many names except one.
He
told her to tell the name only to her son she will have called Horus. The name
passed from him to her and she had all the power. she healed Re and he left the
earth to rule over the heavens.
