Biathlon was first included in the Olympic Games in 1960 although a very similar event, military patrol, was contested in 1924. Women were first allowed to participate in 1992. There are currently four events for both men and women: the sprint (10 km men/7.5 km women), the individual (20 km men/15 km women), the pursuit (12.5 km men/10 km women), and the relay (4 X 7.5 km). In 2006, the 15 km for men/12.5 km women event will be added. Biathlon is a winter sport which combines cross-country skiing and rifle shooting. It is very popular in Europe and Russia. It has origins as an exercise for Norwegian soldiers. All skiing techniques may be used, but skis and poles are the only equipment allowed. The athlete carries a 3.5 kg rifle and ammunition on his back. The target range shooting distance is 50 meters.
