Quan - Researcher/Scripting and Technical Content Writing/Team Leader
"I got these jobs is because I’m best in the team at web designing and technical writing, even though too familar with subjects myself. I created the outlines and layout from stratch, with the help of my team mates, through much trial and error. It was frustrating, yet exciting at the same time, to finally be able to create a web site, and learning a lot about web designing at the same time."
Radhika - Researcher/Assistant Editor
"Unfortunately I joined the group much later on, but I eventually am able to catch up with the others in researching and editing. I am not in the same class as my fellow team mates so it was hard for me to keep up with what is going on with the project. Since I am unable to work on it at school, they helped me work on it at my own free time, giving me directions and instructions to follow. I am glad to be able to help out; it taught me a lot about working together and carrying out my responsibilities in such a large assignment."
Amy - Researcher/Graphics
"In this group I have worked on many things such as researching on numerous countries, finding the quality pictures of foods, and even more images of locations. I know that what I contributed really helped the team a lot through my hard work because the web site wouldn't go anywhere without the things I searched for. I'm not really experienced with computers and web sites but working on this project have thought me many skills necessary to carry out team work."
Huong - Researcher/Graphics
"I was put in charge of researching on the cuisines of countries like Libya, Cuba, and Chile. It was difficult than I thought at first. As time passed by, many problems came up, such as beating the deadline or finding the right images. I'm glad I am held reposnsible this job, since I get to learn more about the countries I worked on and see many beautiful pictures that accompanies it. It is a wonderful experience to work on a web site, knowing that other people will soon view the hard work you contributed."
Minh - Researcher/Chief Editor
"The most difficult part of being a researcher and editor is having to read all the gathered information, deciding which belongs and doesn't, summarizing while keeping a sufficient amount of information, and checking back for any spellings or grammar mistakes. It is an exhausting job to keep up with all of the text in the web site. I have also learned so many different things about the world-wide cuisines, which is the best part also; to feed my brain with delicious information!"
Tiffany - Researcher/Content Director
"This project is quite an experience! I had a good time researching on many interesting countries and being in charge of the content. I won't lie; it's not enjoyable to stare at pictures of delicious food with an empty stomach but I made it through! Sometimes I encounter many obstacles along the way while researching. Being the content director, I'm in charge of mostly the quizes, facts, and quotes. It was hard to keep up with all of them but through persistence and effort, anything is possible."
Collaboration
We worked together with varied skills and experience. We didn’t know each other that well in the beginning, but have learned to rely on each other. At first, we divided up the tasks needed to be completed. But as we delved further into the project, we discovered that not just one person could do such a big part. We started sharing our roles and helping each other. One job cannot be done without the help of another. We compromised our different perspectives about how the web site should develope, and it's content. The creation of our web site started in Dessau Middle School Web Mastering class when our teacher (and later on, coach), Mrs. Kamper, informed us about an educational contest called ThinkQuest. We were excited to finally be able to use the web designing skills we learned to make our first official web site and at the same time contribute to the comprehensive and growing ThinkQuest Library for students around the world to view. Although we weren’t exactly too familiar with the concept of Web Designing, we decided it was going to be fairly easily due to how flexible the project is. Of course problems and obstacles were accounted later on, starting off with teamwork. Our team was chosen base on the similarity of our interests and ideas, yet we already had a difficult time choosing a topic for our contest entry that is both educational and interesting at the same time. We were able to agree on the topic of World Cultures at last but unfortunately the topic was too broad to cover given the amount of time before the deadline. After compromising, we pinpointed down the original topic to food, one of the many important aspects of world cultures. The job of researching was separated base on the continents (excluding Antarctica, due to lack of information on the food in that region), so that everyone in the team will have one continent that they are held responsible for the content of. Everyone carried out their responsibilities to make this web site.
