Popular Gods

 

Zeus

Zeus was the main god, most Greeks followed Zeus. He ruled the sky, and from the clouds he controlled lightning.

Poseidon

Poseidon was the god of sea. He had a Trident which he used to create earthquakes and Tsunamis.

Hades

Hades was the god of the underworld and death. He was also known as Pluton (or Pluto), which meant wealth, so he was believed to be wealthy.

Hestia

Hestia was the goddess of hearth and home, she ruled over domestic peace. Hestia was a proud Olympian goddess, being Zeus' eldest sister.

 

Hera

Hera was the goddess of marriage. She was the wife and sister of Zeus.

Ares

Ares was the son of Zeus and Hera. He ruled battles and warfare.

Athena

Athena was the god of wisdom, war, strategy, and crafts. The Parthenon was a shrine built for Athena.

Apollo

Apollo was the god of the sun. He was considered the god of "manly beauty," so many males are named after him.

Aphrodite

Aphrodite was the goddess of love and beauty. She has a festival of her own, called the Aphrodisiac. In this festival, intercourse with her priestess is considered holy and it symbolized loyalty to Aphrodite.

Hermes

Hermes is the god of boundaries. He is known as the god of mysteries, thus the word Hermeneutics means the art of revealing hidden messages.

Artemis

Artemis was the goddess of the moon. Other religions had her as a goddess as well, some in Asia.

Hephaestus

He was the goddess of forging. Many people in the mining and crafting industry worshipped him.
