THE 7 WONDERS OF SINGAPORE

SENTOSA

A little History

Sentosa was originally known as Pulau Blakang Mati (meaning 'the island behind which lies death' in Malay). This is because it was believed that a malaria outbreak exterminated the entire Bugis community who was residing on the island.
The island turned from a fishing village into a British military fortress until 1967 when it was handed back to the Singapore Government. In the year 1968, the Government decided to develop the island into a holiday resort for both local visitors and tourists. The public was then invited to suggest names for the island and "Sentosa", meaning peace & tranquility in Malay was eventually chosen to depict the island resort.

Sentosa now

Today, Sentosa is a name falmiliar to both Singaporeans and international visitors. For tourists, a visit to Singapore is counted as wasted and incomplete if they did not spend at least a day on Sentosa. As for Singaporeans, Sentosa has become our recreational playground, with increasing repeat visits as a result of the many events and promotions that the island introduces.
