What do
think of when
the word dragon
comes into mind. Big
wings, tail and breathes
fire. Well African
dragons are partly
like that. Most of
them have wings
but don’t have
legs. They are
mostly like big
fire breathing snakes
or they at least
look like that.
Most of the
dragons are thought
to be related
to fire by
some way. Most have
the snake like
body and huge
red wings. Some
of the myths
say that the
dragon terrorized a
villages . Then the
people of the
village would sacrifice
something to the
dragon ( usually a girl
or human). Then the
dragon would either
give the village
what they want
or continue terrorizing
them. Some myths
also have that
the lover of
the woman who
is going to
be sacrificed kills
the dragons.
Some the most
famous dragons include
Apophis, Bida, Dragon of the
lake , Hydra,
the basilisk Isa
Bere , Tiamat .
The basilisk is
said to be
born from the
blood of some
poisonous snakes. It
is also said
that it could
run over water
and the land
it walks on
gets poisoned . It is also
a creature of
Greek mythology. Only
three things can
be immune to
it. Those three things are
the weasel rue
and cockerel. It is
thought to live
in northern Africa
and western Europe. It is
said to look
like a lizard .
Also said to
be white with
no legs and
is red. His body
is about three
feet long. It
could possibly look
like a Egyptian
spitting lizard. |

Bida is one of the West
African dragons who appears in one of the greatest Epics of Dausi. The story
tells about a dieing king Dina who sent his oldest son to report to him about
the kingship. The eldest son wouldn't do it but his youngest son was the only
one who came and his name was Lagarre. The king told his son to find nine
jars of water and when you were bathing in the water you become king. Then he
told his son to Find the drum of Tabele and to ring it. When he did this a
city came out of the sand with Bida encircling the city. This city was called
Wagadoo. Lagarre made a deal with Bida to let him go into the city. Each year
the city would sacrifice a girl to the dragon and in return he would give a
lot of gold to them. Then one day, the dragon was killed by the lover of the
girl. When Bida came out of the lake the lover of the girl cut off Bida’s
head and threw it to the Gold Coast. |
