Mongol Invasions

The Mongols tried several times to take control of Japan. Most attempts were blocked out by typhoons over seas. Their attacks that were closest to success were in 1274 and 1281. They burned large masses of lands and had also had control of a small piece of land. But mountains and Japan’s large army made it near impossible for the Mongols to remain there for very long. The Mongols never successfully occupied Japan. Mongols mainly wanted Japan because it realized Japan as a threat. It had people that were great soldiers and they were never short on supply of soldiers. Other than the Mongols, Japan lived in peace almost all the time. Japan was a pretty well isolated country. These people were the greatest enemy and greatest threat toward Japan. These people traveled in packs or tribes and didn’t necessarily have a well settled government. They normally just attacked Japan in search of land and riches. One main reason that The Mongols were in constant defeat was because of its internal wars between civilizations and other lower class tribes. In the middle ages, Mongols acquired more land at this point than any other civilization. A strong military was formed by the government by combining themselves and smaller tribes of people together. Genghis Khan was the main reason Mongols even had great wealth and success. He was even pronounced as emperor of Mongolia in 1206. His empire was well guarded with 1000 day guards and 1000 night guards. As his empire grew, the amount increased to 10000 of each. Further more, what strengthened his powers were that his military was divided into 3 parts. These parts were the Jun-gar, Baran-gar, and the khol, that supported the conquest with power. However, the Mongols used a different tactic to conquer lands surrounding it. Their government taught special lessons of speed and the method of surprise. The government also set up how they would fight during wars. Before the attack started, 200 scouts and soldiers went ahead. They never attacked by themselves without their main troops arriving behind them. Then they would launch their attack safely from the back of their enemies. Genghis Khan was the greatest conqueror that they would ever have. Buddhism wasn’t a main factor for the warriors in Mongolia. They were not required to get into any religious affairs. Now, leather was also worn underneath regular armor for comfort, which showed higher increased victory numbers in war. They also devised a new method to give out commands without the enemy knowing what the command was. The commander stood on elevated areas and raised different color flags with each representing one command or another. Most of the flags were black or white with some patterns on them. Horses were also used by Mongols that allowed them to move even more swiftly and carry more things. Many victories were won by shear numbers. Unfortunately for the Mongols, this wouldn’t work when fighting Japan.  After Genghis Khan’s death, his 3rd son became the new heir to the throne. But he wasn’t exactly the best of rulers. He caused all of his father’s work to crumble apart. Their land separated and the kingdom lost the majority of its power. He made one last attempt to continue his reign. He launched an outstanding attack on Japan and South Korea. However, as soon as the attack started, fighting among his own kingdom started. As the wars carried on, the power and control of the previous kingdom was almost completely depleted. Religion, which was never involved in the rise of the empire, led to its fall. Buddhism and Islam had problems and the Turkish became the common language. All of this caused problems. Religion may have led the Mongols to their fall of power, but they were still a great kingdom at one time. They were the nation that came closest to conquering Japan.
