Hand held weapons were a big part of the samurai in the late Medieval era. Once the samurai's code changed to Bushido, meaning way of the warrior, they also started moving towards swords, instead of bows and ranged weapons. The katana, the wakizashi, and tanto were now the main weapons used by the samurai. Hand held weapons greatly influenced Medieval Japanese warfare.
