Bushido was an important part of medieval Japanese warfare because the samurai used it. Bushido, meaning “Way of the warrior,” was originally started when the samurai made changes in their styles of fighting. In the early times of the samurai, they were mostly riding on horses and using bows. Over time, they changed and started fighting on foot with swords, along with spears and later, guns. Their entire code changed from Kyuba no michi, meaning “Way of the horse and bow” to Bushido, “Way of the warrior.”
Bushido was and still is a popular way of living. It had values containing loyalty, respect to parents, hard work, and others, along with other beliefs taken from different religions. Bushido was taken from 4 different religions, Buddhism, Zen Buddhism, Chinese Confucian Philosophy, and Shintoism. Buddhism has influenced the values of bushido by stressing moderation or keeping an even amount of what you do. Zen Buddhism influenced Bushido by stressing physical and mental discipline along with Chinese Confucian Philosophy, which stressed duty and loyalty. Lastly, Shintoism also stressed loyalty same as Chinese Confucian Philosophy, but also influenced patriotism.
Bushido was not only an important way of fighting wars. It was a way of helping you show honesty and sincerity towards others. Apart from wars, samurai lived the same life as the normal citizens of Japan. During that time they also had to act like normal citizens so they used bushido to guide them. Bushido gave you values, not only ways of helping you fight in wars, but helping you show loyalty to friends, trustworthiness to family, respect to parents, and others that would make them a better person. If they were to enter a school, they could use Bushido. It would help them make friends with kids and adults by using the values of honesty and self control. They would also be influenced from bushido and get good grades because of the value hard work. Bushido can help you in any type of situation.
The samurai were using this code to live their life. Bushido also stressed on five moral relations. One was master and servant and a second was father and son. A third one was husband and wife, a fourth one older and younger brother, and a fifth one was friend and friend. Bushido was a great way of living a samurai’s life and it still is leading people’s lives today.
