Pagodas in India

The beginnings of pagodas are said to be from India. The Buddhists used the pagodas as temples. The name "pagoda" comes from Sanskrit. It means "tomb." Many of the pagodas in India were made from either mud or stone. The first pagodas in India were simple. They weren't as extravagant as the ones built later on. The Buddhists called them stupas. Stupas were small and big. The small ones were like decorations and the big ones were used to cremate or sacrifice people in. What made the stupas so famous? When Buddha died he asked that his bones be put in a stupa. From then on stupas were made in His honor.
