Coyote

Coyotes can do many surprising things. They can run up to 40 miles per hour! They have yellowish eyes and have brown, reddish brown and gray mottled hair. Their long tail is bushy and tipped with black.

They weigh between 20 - 40 pounds and the female is smaller than the male.

They have always lived near forests, prairies and wetlands, but with people moving into their areas they are finding populated areas to have a lot of food. The Horicon Marsh also provides an area with plenty of food and safe places to live. A coyote is a scavenger, meaning they eat animals that have died. They also hunt for small rodents, frogs, fish and birds. They will even eat fruit and corn if they can find it!  Coyotes are very clean animals, they even remove bones from their dens.

They have 5 to 7 pups a year, usually born in April. The den is usually a deep hole in the ground. They prefer to use old dens, but will dig a new one if they have to.

They are found in every county in Wisconsin, but live more in the north than the south.
