The Underwater World of Singapore (U.W.A.S) is a conservation aquarium. This aquarium is well known for its reef transplant project. The project has to do with the conservation of coral reefs and transporting them to transplant sites. The aquarium started this program because 50-70% of the world’s reefs are endangered because of things like illegal fish bombing. The practice of catching fish with fish bombing is damaging coral and fish. The poisons from the bomb damages the reefs so critically that it takes 50 years to recover. Thanks to Underwater World of Singapore the reefs can recover in safer conditions.
The Singapore aquarium also protects pink dolphins. Currently scientists are doing research on things such as blood analysis and hormone levels. This information could not be collected if these dolphins were in the wild.
This aquarium is also a rehab center for sea turtles. For about a decade the Underwater World Aquarium of Singapore (U.W.A.S) has treated and cared for sea turtles rescued from smugglers. Many healthy turtles have been released back into the wild including 13 Green Turtles and 2 Hawksbill Turtles. |
