Did you know that crabs are related to lobsters? Well, they are, except crabs are way more common. Almost everyone has either seen a crab or a crab shell and, none the less but, eaten a crab.
Crabs can live in freshwater and saltwater. They are very lively. Crabs hustle to get their food. | |
They have a shell that is long but not very wide. Underneath the shell is 3-4 sets of legs used for walking. Some crabs have 2 claws that are for pinching for self defense against predators and some have one claw. | |
Crabs can be small or very big. The "catalog of crabs" has over 4,500 types. You can find many types of crabs up or around seashore or on salt marshes. | |
The most unusual crab but, the most common PET crab is the hermit crab. These crabs use empty snail shells for their shelter. That is unusual to see! The boneless family is called crustaceans. There are nearly 50,000 types of crab in this family. That’s a lot! | |
Most all crabs begin live in water. Crabs can live in many places like , mud, sand, and burrows . The ghost crab lives in a ocean bottom burrow. The fiddler crab lives in a mud burrow. Land crabs live in seaside trees! Crabs spend half of their life hustling for food (that’s when we normally see them), and the other half trying to hide from predators. | |
Also crabs are predators to younger crabs and bate for older crabs and other animals. Believe it or not, we as humans are predators to crabs because we eat parts of crabs such as crab legs. Crabs move very swiftly. They use this swiftness to get away from their predators. | |
A funny thing about them is that they run sideways! Crabs have their own ways of doing things. |
