Trebuchet Lesson
Materials:
-Popsicle Sticks
-One spoon
-Masking tape
-One Marshmallow (Projectile)
-Rubber band(s)
-Paper and Pencil
Procedures:
Draw blueprints for a catapult using the materials given to you. Begin to tape the
Popsicle sticks together, creating your base for your catapult. You can have walls, a
floor, supports, and anything else that you want to build. Tape your spoon to the base at
the bottom so it flips back and forth and so it stands vertically. Add your rubber
band(s). Place your marshmallow on the spoon. Pull back your spoon and release.
1. How did different styles of the design of the catapult effect the
distance the marshmallow traveled?
2. How did the stability of the catapult add to the
distance of the marshmallow?
3. Do you think a quarter would fly farther than the
marshmallow did? Why or why not?
4. Do you think your marshmallow would fly a greater
distance or a less distance if you added another rubber band to your catapult?
5. Find the speed of the marshmallow by using the
formula for speed. (s = dt)
6. How did the design and structure of the catapult add
to the speed of the marshmallow?
