Battle of Chancellorsville

On April 27, 1863 General Lee made a surprising discovery.  He noticed Union General Hooker and his army crossing the Rappahannock River.  General Lee used the crossing to his advantage; he split his army and attacked the Union Army in three places.  General Hooker was caught by surprise and tried to fend off the attacking army but did not succeed.  General Hooker was forced back across the river while suffering heavy casualties.  It gave the South a much needed victory but lost many fellow soldiers during the close victory.
