Common Disease

These diseases are usually associated with fish farms.

External Diseases

Columnaris
Affectionately referred to as flexibactor columnaris. This disease is prevalent where water temperature is above 54 degrees Fahrenheit. Symptoms include grayish white lesions all over the unfortunate fish's body. It is treated with copper sulfate flushes.

Bacterial gill disease
This disease also shows up when water temperature is over 54 degrees and with crowding. The unhappy fish's gills are swollen and clubbed; mucus forms and fish declines to eat. It's treated by dipping or flushing the ailing salmon with copper sulfate.

Penducle disease
Also known as cold water or low temperature disease, which gives a clue as to how it comes about. This disease affects fingerlings. Symptoms include destruction (yes, that's right!) of tissue of caudal and peduncle fins. It's treated with a combination of ever-useful copper sulfate flushes and by adding terramycin to the fishes food.
