Our guides, Dr. Conor and Dr. Jasmine, are in hot pursuit of the whale misnamed “killer” and they want you to join them on their journey. The trip is bound to be as long as it is fascinating because these amazing creatures inhabit every ocean on the planet; this species is truly the “global whale.” Our target audience is grade 3 – 6 students who want to broaden their knowledge of this species. While there are many other sites on killer whales, our main goal has been to create a site that looks at this mammal through “fresh eyes” with a highly interactive format. Topics covered include various cultural beliefs about orca, orca “myths” versus “orca fact,” and the ongoing debate on whether or not orcas should be kept in captivity. Some of the learning outcomes covered by our site include the following: • classify orcas according to their appearance and behavior • describe human actions that affect the health of killer whales • describe how killer whales are important to the lives of aboriginal peoples around the world • describe how killer whales are important to their environment and the ocean food chain. Our skilled team of student programmers and graphics artists especially recommend activities like the “Orca Survival Game,” the “Food Chain Challenge,” and the “Great Debate.” We hope that our many activities will be informative, yet fun. Let the voyage begin! This site was created by three Canadian grade seven students and one grade five student from Finland and was entered in the 2006 Thinkquest competition. |
