Classification

Classifying something as complex as terrorism is difficult at times. This is because there are overlaps in the various types of terrorism. Generally two two major classifications of terrorism have emerged:

a) by motive and

b) by methods/tactics employed

For example, religious terrorism is motivated by religion while bioterrorism is classified according to the method/tactics employed. However, a terrorist attack could also involve both areas of classification such as terrorism motivated by religion and employing a certain tactic.

In this section we classify the types of terrorism into three large groups, but making a complete classification of all types of terrorism is an extremely difficult, nearly impossible task, because each definition or type is different according to the point of view of the different societies, religions and political systems of the world and often they overlap. Terrorism types can be classified according to aim or motive, according to the nature of its attacks and its perpetrator and victims, etc.

We classify types of terrorism into three groups:

a) Nationalist Terrorism

b) State Terrorism

c) Global Terrorism

The first two types, nationalist and state terrorism are the traditional terrorism types. We will discuss these two traditional types in the next section. The third type, global terrorism has become especially significant in recent times especially after 9/11. However, with the increasing importance of global terrorism and technologies that allowed the various derivatives of global terrorism, our team will focus on derivatives of global terrorism including bio/chemical terrorism, cyberterrorism, narcoterrorism, nuclear terrorism and ecoterrorism in the next few sections
