The Nine were also called The Great Ennead of Heliopolis. They were named this because Heliopolis was the religious capital of Egypt, and sacred to these nine gods: Atum, Tefnut, Shu, Nut, Geb, Isis, Seth, Osiris, and Nephthys. All being the descendants of Ra (God of the sun).
The Nine took care of the Egyptians. They provided food, water, and most of the things needed for this civilization (as well as the afterlife and death).
They were the most important deities, the council that judged the misbehaving gods, and also the highest power.
