Register
Cliff was one of the places where the
Mormon Pioneers stopped on their journey to the Salt Lake Valley. Before they
left the cliff, they all signed their names on the cliff and named it ‘Register
Cliff’. Once more pioneers got there they signed their names, too. And
it kept going and going until all the pioneers reached the Salt Lake Valley.
But, not every pioneer got to the valley. That’s because some gave up,
died of starvation, or died of hypothermia in the winter. Located two miles
southeast of Guernsey, Wyoming, Register Cliff acted as if it were an enormous
‘chalkboard’ for the pioneers to sign their names on it.
Today, it is a Wyoming national landmark that many people tour and take pictures.
There are many names that people might recognize from their genealogy program
on their computer. I hope to visit Register Cliff someday and I hope you do
too.
