Traditions

During the Chinese New Year, parents give their children money in red
envelopes. These gifts symbolize good luck. On the last day of the
Chinese New Year they celebrate a lantern festival. During the
celebrations, they never use knives or scissors because it is
considered to cut off their fortune. Children and unmarried friends are
given laisee (which are little red envelopes with crisp paper money for
good fortune.) They believe that washing their hair causes bad luck.
Because children cannot cry during the Chinese New Year parents are not
allowed to spank or anger their children in any sort of way regardless
of had naughty they are. Nobody can use bad language or say the word
“four”, because it sounds like the Chinese word for death. All debts
are paid on the New Year. Shooting off firecrackers is a way of saying
that the old year is gone and the New Year is here. At midnight they
open their windows and doors to let the old year pass.
