Han Chinese Clothing

Written by Paul

According to Chinese tradition, Hanfu can be traced back to the Yellow Emperor. The Yellow Emperor was said to be a sage king of ancient China who ruled in the twenty-seventh century. Hanfu refers to all Han Chinese dresses made up until the seventieth century. Hanfu was thought to be very important to the Chinese culture.

alt Shenyi is a type of a full-length, one-piece robe that links the Yi to the Chang to cover and wrap the body. Parts of a Shenyi include:
1. The Jin- the front of the upper garment
2. The Jiaoling Youren- Crossed collars tying to the right
3. The Qu- sleeve cuffs
4. The Mei- sleeves
5. The Chang- skirt
6. The Quju- Skirt with a curved hem

Hanfu disappeared at the beginning of the Qing dynasty (1644-1911). The Qing dynasty was founded not by the Han, but the Manchus. The Manchus were a semi-nomadic people who first rose to prominence in Manchuria. In 1644 the Manchus highly organized army invaded Beijing. Manchus forced the Hanfu people to adopt their style of clothing. Therefore Hanfu clothing was replaced with Manchu-style clothing for men, but women were still allowed to wear Ming-era clothing.
After the fall of the Qing dynasty in 1911, Manchu dresses and pigtails were replaced with western style clothing. This is what Han Chinese people wear today.

alt Dupioni (also spelled Duppioni) is a popular strong double-thread silk that is made when people reel silk fibers from a cocoon that two silkworms have created together. An average silkworm cocoon can contain 300-400 meters of silk (984-1312 ft). Even with this amount of silk, it takes approximately 5,500 silkworms to produce only 1kg (2.2lb) of raw silk. Dupioni is often marked that you may only dry clean, but you can wash it before you cut it out. The fabric will lose some of its stiffness and possibly some of its sheen. It also may shrink 14% when washed (5 in per yard), but it will be hard to wrinkle. As a bonus of washing dupioni, you'll have no dry cleaning bills!!
