Legless lizards belong to the family Anguidae, and live in the Americas in fairly dry habitats. Another name for the Legless Lizard is the Glass Lizard. Though they are legless, the still have small hipbones, and small tips of hind legs. Including its tail, the Legless Lizard is about 2-3 feet long. When Legless lizards are born, their mother leaves them to hunt and survive on their own. Legless lizards are different than snakes, because they have moveable eyelids, several rows of belly scales, and the ability to break off their tail when they are in danger. When their tail breaks off, it continues to wiggle to distract the predator. The legless lizard eats insects, snails, and occasionally, small mammals. They live for about 54 years. The legless lizard is endangered due to habitat loss. People are the greatest threat to the Legless Lizard. Maybe if people knew that there are many overlooked endangered animals, such as the legless lizard, then they could help keep them safe.
