Golden Lion Tamarin

Scientific Name: Leontopithecus Rosalia

(Leon-top-i-the-cus Rose-a-lia)

The Golden Lion Tamarin can be found in the Tropical rainforest in Eastern Brazil. It has a bright golden colored coat, that makes it one of the brightest colored of all mammals. They have dark and hairless faces. The Tamarins prefer to live 5-10 meters up in the trees. They can leap from branch to branch very quickly. They do not like direct sunlight, for they are sensitive in many ways. They would hide in shadowy places in the hottest hours of the day. Tamarins make a variety of different noises. The ones you would here most often are a shrill whistle, chirring, trills, whines, and clucks. They usually sleep in holes in trees. A female Golden Lion Tamarin will give birth to young during the Spring, when it rains a lot because food is is more easily to be found. Twins are most common. After the babies have been alive for three weeks, their father starts to take the most care of the babies. The babies will only return to their mothers to nurse.

The Golden Lion Tamarin is one of the most endangered primates in the world.  In the early 1980s, it was suddenly known that there were more Golden Lion Tamarins captured  than in the wild.
