Black Howler Monkey

    Scientific Name: Alouatta Caraya

    (Al-o-at-ta Car-a-ya)

The Black Howler Monkey can be found in Brazil, Paraguay, and Argentina. You would mostly be able to find them in the dry deciduous forests.

The adult males are totally black, and adult females range in color from a light golden to dark yellow. They have tongues that are pink, bordered with a black outline. Usually they only have one child. Both males and females have the same color fur until the male turns black at age 2 1/2 years old.

The howler monkeys may come down to the ground to drink from ponds. They drink a lot more water when there is not a lot of leaves anymore. They also get water from other sources by wetting then licking their hands.

You may see grooming mostly between adult-females and their young. A male would usually be groomed by the adult-female.
