Bald Eagle

The Bald Eagle is a very patriotic symbol in our country. And it is our national bird. But the bald eagle is extremely rare in North America. It is endangered in 43 states and threatened in 5. The Bald Eagle mainly lives in the United States near lakes, rivers, and ponds. It can weigh as little as 4.5 pounds and can be as big as 14 pounds. The wingspan 6.5-8 feet and the body is usually around 36 inches long. The average lifespan is 40 years. Even though there were at least 500,000 in the 1700's, there are less than 10,000 because of eagle shootings now. But, we do now have environmental protection laws for the bald eagle. Hopefully, someday there will be as many Bald Eagles as there used to be. But for now, all we can do is hope.
