Our Coal Mine Gallery

This shuttle brought us down into the mine. Our heads reached the ceiling of the car and it was very cramped.

Donkeys were used to pull the ore cars out of the mine.

The fireboss kept track of who was working in the mine each day and where they were working in case there was an explosion or dangerous gases.

This is an old-time gas mask in case the gas level in the mine got too high.

The tunnel picture looks light BUT there is nothing darker than a mine when the lights are turned off!

Coal was sent by conveyor to a tank. Dump trucks were put under the tank and the coal was dumped into the truck from the tank.

This is part of the Mine Team and Mr. Ben, our tour guide.

Our photographers took TONS of pictures... and then took TONS more!

The nipper boy opened and closed the airlock doors so that ore cars and miners could get through. He was usually a very young boy.

This is an old time miners' lamp.

Coal is dropped through a chute into this shuttle car.

The museum held the largest piece of coal we ever saw!
