Body Mass Index

Do you want to know if you’re overweight or not? Use a BMI! BMI is short for body mass index and doctors use BMI to determine if a person is obese.  To figure out your BMI, doctors divide your weight in kilograms by your height in meters squared. If it’s fewer than 20, your underweight, 20-25 means you’re healthy, over 25 means you’re overweight, and over 35 means you’re obese, or extremely overweight.  One way to find out if you are obese is if you use the formula called BMI; body mass index. The formula is when doctors take your height and weight and estimate how much body fat you have. BMI has eight percentile lines for 5th, 10th, 25th, 50th, 75th, 85th, 90th, and 95th. A teen with a BMI under the 5th percentile is considered underweight because 95% of the age group has a higher BMI. A teen with a percentile is considered overweight because 95% of the age group has a lower BMI. BMI is not always accurate because a person who has a lot of muscle maybe considered overweight according to BMI.
