Wrestling Styles

Different wrestling styles

There are two different styles of olympic wrestling:  Greco Roman and Freestyle.  Our site provides information on both.  In the U.S., high school and colleges, folk style wrestling is used.  This is very similar to Freestyle wrestling rules and strategies.

Greco Roman and Freestyle wrestling both originated on the east side of the Mediterrean Sea, where the Ancient Greeks developed the first forms of wrestling.  Boys were paired up and learned wrestling in their master’s palaestra, witch is a private exercise court built onto the house of a schoolmaster.

In Greco Roman, a wrestler  may not attack his opponent's legs.  He cannot use his own legs either, to trip or lift an opponent.  Legs may not be used to begin a move, either.  This style of wrestling focuses on throwing your opponent.

In Freestyle, both the arms and legs can be used.  Though it is similar to folkstyle, it has different scoring and strategies.

Our site will detail the rules of Folkstyle wrestling because that is what we particiate in at our school.
