Receptor Endings

In the skin there are 5 types of nerve-ends and they all have their own function and location.
Some of them lie deeper into the skin, some of them more to the surface.

Receptors are specialized endings of afferent neurons or separate cells that affect ends of afferent neurons.
They collect information about external and internal environment in various energy forms-and energy that activates a receptor is called a stimulus.

hair follicle ending
Hair Follicle Ending

Responds to hair
displacement.
Wraps around
hair follicle in,
of course, hairy skin.
ruffini ending
Ruffini Endings

Responds to
pressure on skin.
Dermis of both
hairy and glabrous skin.
krause corpuscle
Krause corpuscle

Responds to
pressure.
Lips, tongue,
and genitals.
pacinian corpuscle
Pacinian corpuscle

Responds to vibration.
Most sensitive in
150-300 Hz range
Deep layers
of dermis in both hairy
and glabrous skin.
meisner corpuscle
Meissner corpuscle

Responds to vibration.
Most sensitive in
20-40 Hz range
Dermis of
glabrous skin.
free nerve endings
Free nerve endings

Different types of free
nerve endings that
respond to mechanical,
thermal or noxious
stimulation.
Various types are
found throughout the skin.
