Taste and Smell

You can smell many different things.
But you can only taste four different things.
Sweet, sour, salt and bitter.
All the other things you 'taste' with your nose.
This experiment will prove that.

What to do?
You need a few glasses with different flavours of sweet drinks.
For instance Apple Juice, Orange Juice, Green Lemonade, etc.
You also need a friend to assist you.

Ask your friend to close the eyes.
Let him or her drink from the different glasses and ask her what she drunk.
The answers will probably be right.

Now ask your friend to squeeze the nose.
Let him/her drink again from the different glasses with the nose squeezed.
He/she probably will not be able to guess the different flavours.

You taste the different flavours of the drinks with your nose.
When you have your nose squeezed than you will only taste the sugar in the sweet drinks.
