History of Chinese Dancing

        Chinese dances go back over 5,000 years ago.  Their dances can be divided into four different parts. Ceremonial is for praying to the Gods for bountiful harvests. Dramatic, for reporting and to honor historical events. Martial arts for demonstrating fighting techniques. Agricultural for celebrating nature and work.

Like the United States, China is a nation of many different ethnicities. Each has its own history, language, tradition, and keeps its own distinct customs and style of dress. Some of the larger minority groups are the Mongols, the Dai, and the Miao.
       
The Dragon Dance for example is a ceremonial Dance. In Chinese mythology, the dragon represents prowess, nobility, and good fortune. Traditionally the dragon dance was used to expel devils and bring people good luck. It is especially preformed during Chinese New Year. The dragon is followed by a noisy procession filled with drumming, fireworks, and cheering crowds.
       
        The Chinese Opera is an example of a dramatic dance. Warriors are important characters in telling a story. They bring visual excitement with their acrobatic moves. Both female and male wear costumes that allow them to perform spectacular high kicks.
