Competitions

Competitions are a very important part of figure skating.  Each country has its own National Championship, and is only for top skaters in the country.  There are larger competitions such as the World Championships of Figure Skating. The world Championship is when top skaters from each country compete, and whoever places first is considered the world champion for the year.  In 2005, Irina Slutskya won the World Championship in the ladies category.   In 2006 she will no longer be the World Champion, unless she decides to compete again and wins.  In the men’s category Ste`phane Lambiel won the championship.  If a country’s skater finishes in the top ten, the country can send more than one skater back to the World Championship the next year.

The Winter Olympics games are considered a very big competition.  The Olympics are held every four years.  The Winter Olympics started in 1924 in Chamonix, France.  It was most recently held in Salt Lake City, Utah in 2002. If a skater wins a medal, it is considered the most prestigious figure skating medal.

There are easier competitions than worldwide competitions.  There are competitions held by the ISI, which stands for the Ice Skating Institute.  ISI competitions are for people that skate for fun and recreation.  There are thousands of people that compete in ISI competitions each year.
