Desert!

Deserts are places where average rainfall is 10 inches per year and the average temperature is 20-25 C.  There are many types of plants in the desert.  One of the more common plants is the cactus. They are several types of cacti. For example, there is the barrel cactus, the crimson cactus, the square cactus and the dessert ironwood.  The cactus is the plant most animals use for food and water.

In the desert, the animals live underground to keep cool but in a cold desert they still go underground.  Deserts have insects, spiders, reptiles, birds, and mammals.  Most animals visit a desert after rainfall in search for food and water.  The animals mostly come out at night, because it is cooler then.

In the desert, it is dry because high-pressure zone.  So where almost every desert they are high-pressure zones.  It hardly rains because the heat from the ground evaporates the water before it comes down as rain.  The lowers temperature in the desert would be about 64 degrees Fahrenheit.  The latitude range is 15 - 28 degrees north and south of the equator.  The deserts cover about 1/5 of the earth.  The lack of water to the animals as a bigger deal than it is to the plants.  The plants store water so they will stay alive.

In the Sonoran desert, the plants are mostly bushes. This desert is located in Arizona.  The only kind of tree in this desert is named the Joshua Tree. These trees are found in the Joshua Tree National Park, which is located in Arizona.  This tree is the largest tree of the yuccas and grows only in this desert.  The Brittle Bush and Common Saltbush are the most common bush plant in this area. The animals in this desert are mostly dangerous.  They include the carnivorous, or meat eating, coyotes and snakes. These snakes eat small animals like rats and field mice, while coyotes mostly eat Jack rabbits. The rattlesnakes are also found in the western part of Texas.

The Mojave Desert is the smallest of the four deserts in the United States.  It got its name from the Mohave Native Americans.  The Mojave Desert is special because it has .  This desert has an elevation of 2,000 to 5,000 feet.  It has two temperatures in this desert.  It has cold at the top and hot at the bottom.
