Grassland

A grassland is called a grassland because you will mostly see grass there rather than trees. There are two categories of grasslands.  One is tropical and the other is temperate. Grasslands are mostly areas with or without trees inhabited by mammals.  They're found in various part of the world.  Grasslands have very fertile soil.

The grasslands in North America are known as the prairies.  Prairies have few trees, sometimes found on hill slopes.  Oxen and bison eat prairie grass.  This prairie grass has been threatened due to exploitation and grassland destruction by humans.  Steppe is another type of grassland.  Steppe is also in North American and found in areas less prone to moisture.  Steppes are usually found in the deserts and highly threatened by climatic conditions.  Steppe is shorter than prairie grasslands.  Savannas are another type of grassland.  They are located in Africa.  Savannas have life that has adapted to hot, dry climates.   Savannas are broad grasslands with trees, usually with wet and dry seasons.  In the southern part of Africa, savannas are sometimes called grass veldts dominated by grass layers.  Animals like giraffes, zebras, African elephants, black rhinos, hippopotamuses, and cheetahs live in this region.  Hawks, falcons, and meadowlarks fly over this region. Other animals that can be found living in the grasslands include eagles, coyotes, Canadian geese, bison, and prairie chickens.

The grasslands of Argentina are called pampas.  The word pampas means "plains without trees."  The soil is very rich and fertile and produces abundant crops in this region.  It is one of the most threatened regions on earth due to the grazing of livestock and farming.
