More Solutions Post #1: What are the Best Ways to Alleviate Poverty?
The Post (December 16, 2005):
They are two major ways to alleviate poverty. The first one is to do at a global level, which is quite abstract, by helping countries to provide education for their people, with money, resources, or development help in general.

The second way is to do it locally, which is more concrete, by going in on the ground and working with people from villages who know what they need, and by teaching the inhabitants improve their economy. Then, they can feed their family and send their kids to school to receive an education. However, the best thing is to covered it from both angles.
I met a man who spent two months in Tanzania, working on a business development project for people living with AIDS. He worked with people who are from the village because these people knew what they needed. He was helping people to set up small businesses (textile manufacturing) then they can feed their family and send their kids to school so that they can get education.
But I also met a member of the Alliance Française of Dhaka-Bangladesh, heading the training of the teachers there so that they could teach children effectively. He believed the best solution to poverty was education and a better distribution of wealth between the North (developed countries) and South (developing countries).

Inaction, in my view, is a major contributor to continued poverty. If we acted globally and decisively, I believe we could make great progress in poverty alleviation. But we drag our heels.
The United States is the wealthiest country in the world today, and what are they doing for poverty [alleviation] worldwide? Not much.
Just as a surefire way to get rich is to be born into a wealthy family, so poverty is often the birthright of individuals born to poor families.
In my opinion, the biggest cause of poverty is lack of education and lack of a concerted international aid effort against poverty.
The [poverty] problem is simply too big to be handled by even the most well-intentioned of souls.
As [Respondent #5] probably expects, I disagree! On a per capita basis, Bangladesh gets... little in foreign aid and while the 'Green Revolution' has kept millions from starving.
I strongly disagree with [Respondent #5's] response. Every individual has the right to life, no matter if they are American or Bengali.
I take great exception to [Respondent #5's] suggestion that the way to cure poverty is to completely eliminate foreign aid.
