Basketball History Basketball was invented by James Naismith. He was born in 1961 in Almonte, Ontario, Canada. He attended McGill University in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. He was McGill's athletic director. After that he moved on to the YMCA training school in Springfield Massachusetts in 1891. That is where the sport of basketball was born or started. In Springfield he had to create a sport that people could play indoors during the cold seasons. He wanted to create a game that involved skill not strength. The first game was played with a soccer ball and to peach baskets. Naismith joined the university of Kansas in 1898 and became a physical educational teacher and a chaplain. Basketball is know a famous sport that is played all over the world by all age groups. The basketball idea came from a child's game known as duck on a rock. The game involved attempting to knock a duck off of a large rock with another rock. History (back to top)
