Coyote Paw Prints

NPS, 1967

Description

Coyote paw prints are different from a dog's paw print in shape and size. A coyote's paw print is pointed and a dog's paw print is more circular. Also, dogs' toes are spread apart, while the coyote's toes are closer together. Coyote paw prints are closer together than a dog's paw prints which are spread out further. Coyotes nails are long and slender, but the dogs nails are short and oval.

Why People Want to Know!

People want to know if the paw prints they see are dog prints or coyote prints for one reason-to see if their animals are in trouble. They want to see if a coyote is around their animals, or if the prints are just the neighbor's dog. If they can tell the difference they may save an pet or another animal's life.
