Where did the dragon legends come from?

Dragon legends have been found all over the world. In British legends dragons were snake-like with no wings and they were believed to have poisonous breath. The Chinese and Japanese, on the other hand, worshiped dragons in contrast with the Christian religion in which the dragon is a representation of evil. The Chinese are usually the ones who are associated with dragons because it is a big part of their culture. They believe that dragons can control amounts of rainfall and prevent floods. They also had the responsibility of bringing humans to their destination after their death.

Because of the fact that dragon legends have been found all over the world, people think that they existed at one point in time but this is not probable. Researchers believe that most of the legends came from people who made mistakes in the identification of animals or they exaggerated descriptions of skeletons. A few of the animals that might have been mistaken for dragons were pythons and Nile crocodiles. The skeletons that might have been exaggerated probably included beached whales, dinosaurs, mammoths, cave bears, woolly rhinos, and flying reptiles. Another theory is that people confused living animals such as the Komodo Dragon with something else.

In my opinion dragons are mystical creatures that always make a story interesting.
