Paricutin
Paricutin
was formed on February 20, 1943. When the farmer first saw it the volcano was
30 feet high and it was throwing rocks out. All through the day it grew another
120 feet. So it was now 150 feet high. Around the area, volcanic eruptions are
a commonplace, but the birth of an entirely new volcano, marked by the arrival
at the earth’s surface of a distinct vent from the magma chamber, is very rare.
It rose in an area that is greatly known for volcanoes. The place where this
volcano formed is called the Mexican Volcanic Belt and it stretches about 700
miles from east to west along southern Mexico.
