Oceans are a very interesting topic. They are a home for many of Earth’s life forms such as fish, whales, and many underwater plants. Water covers over 70% of the planet. In the United States we recognize four oceans: the Atlantic, Pacific, Arctic, and Indian. Some countries only recognize three; they consider the Artic Ocean to be part of the Atlantic. Some countries even recognize the Mediterranean Sea as an ocean. There is also something that is known as the World Ocean. The World Ocean is all of the bodies of water connected together. However, there has been much debate over how they formed. Some people think that many comets hit the Earth and left their water here. The other theory is that when the planet formed there was a massive release of steam that created both the oceans and the Earth’s atmosphere. Almost the ocean’s entire floor is unmapped. There have been very few explorations of the ocean’s floor also. Oceans are a topic for debate today and they will before many years to come.
