Irene formed on August 4th west of Cape
Verde. Despite poor organization and
shearing wind it became a tropical storm on August 7th. Irene went back and fourth between
strengthening and weakening. It became
disorganized on the morning of August 10th and this caused
forecasters to declare that the storm dissipated. Later it regrouped and became a category 1
hurricane on August 14th. On
August 16th it became a category 2 hurricane briefly. It eventually became an extra tropical south
east of Cape Race, Newfoundland on August 18th. Irene never posed a threat to land.
