Hurricane
Beta
Six hours after becoming a tropical
depression Tropical Storm Beta formed. Beta spent several hours on the verge of
a hurricane and became one at 2 am EST on the 29th
of October. Two hours later Beta had reached Category 3 strength. A small
island 140 miles off the coast of Nicaragua was affected by the
hurricane’s winds and communication with the island was lost for awhile. A day
after forming Hurricane Beta made landfall relatively close to Sandy Bay Sirpi,
a little over 300 km. NE of Nicaragua’s capital. At that point it had weakened
back down to a Category 2 hurricane. As Beta hit land, it dissipated and was no
more. No deaths had been reported due to Beta. The biggest problem was the
cancellation of Honduras’ soccer season.
