| Did you know that coral reefs contain an estimated 25% of all marine species? This is pretty amazing if you consider that these reefs occupy only about 0.1% of the sea floor. Every major group of organism you may have ever heard of has at least one or two of their own species making these coral reefs their home. Unfortunately, all of these creatures and the coral reefs themselves, which have been in existence for over 50 million years, are in danger as you read this. The coral reefs are getting sick; they are constantly threatened and are quickly disappearing from the map all over the globe. Did you know that just in the last four decades over 35 million acres of coral reefs have been destroyed without a trace? Reefs off the coasts of 93 countries have been damaged. If we do not take care of the coral reefs, our most fragile and endangered ecosystem will quickly disappear worldwide.
Coral reefs are beautiful natural structures that many people have heard of but often do not stop to think about. They are among the most productive naturally-occurring ecosystem found on earth. Many people do not know how important reefs are to the ecosystem; still more do not realize that coral reefs are under constant threat of damage and danger.
