One day, when he was walking on the beach, he saw a group of young children throwing tiny stones, broken shells, and sticks at a giant sea turtle that was trying to get back to sea. Urashima Taro cried, “Please, stop, stop! Every living creature in this world is our brother or sister. You cannot hurt this poor gigantic sea turtle! He lives for over 10,000 years; do you know that he is the messenger of the Dragon King who lives under the sea? If you kill something that lives for so long, the loss of all those years will pile up against you. You have to stop, it is wrong.”

The boys paid no attention to Urashima, so he distracted them by giving them coins so they would walk away. The turtle disappeared under the waves.

The next day, Urashima set out for a ride on his boat. The warmth of the sun and the gentle rocking of the boat put Urashima to sleep. When he began to wake up, he saw a beautiful young woman rising up from under the water. She said to Urashima, “Urashima, I am the daughter of the Dragon King who lives under the sea. He was so pleased with the way you saved the gigantic sea turtle yesterday. He sent me to thank you and reward you for your kindness.” With that, she handed Urashima a huge treasure and disappeared back into the ocean.
