Once upon a time, in a small village near Norway lived two brothers. One brother was very rich and the other was really poor. The poor brother used to visit his rich brother asking for some help. The rich brother will usually give some food that the poor brother would take to his family so they could have something to eat. The rich brother was never happy to help his poor brother. One day, before the poor brother could reach his doorstep, he called out to him, “If you promise to do as I ask, I will give you a very large piece of ham.”
The poor brother called out to him, “Sure, I promise.”
The poor brother took the ham and started walking back to his wife. On the way he met a very old man. The old man greeted the poor brother, “Good evening, where are you going in such a hurry?”
The poor brother said, “I'm going home to my wife.”
The old man said, “If you just go a bit farther, you will come to an enchanter's castle. A bunch of trolls will ask for your ham; ask them to trade their coffee mill for your ham. Bring the mill back to me and I will tell you how to use it.”
The poor brother was confused but he was curious. He went to the enchanter's castle. Just as the old man had told him, the trolls asked for his ham. After some argument, the trolls agreed to trade the coffee mill for the ham. The poor brother diligently brought the mill back to the old man. The old man told him, “This is a very special magic mill. If you turn the handle while wishing for something the mill will give it to you. To stop the mill, you simple have to turn it on its side.” The poor brother thanked the old man and finally walked back to his wife. When he reached home, he used the mill to prepare the best dinner they had ever had in their life!
The poor brother stopped going to the rich brother's house to honor the promise he made to him. One day, he had a huge party and invited the entire village and offered them a fancy meal. The rich brother was jealous and asked him how he was able to do all this. The previously poor brother told him about the coffee mill; the rich brother asked him to sell the coffee mill to him for a huge sum of money. The coffee mill was sold and the rich brother ran off with the coffee mill without listening to complete instructions. He knew how to make the mill work, but did not know how to make it stop. He asked the coffee mill for some soup, his wish was answered and answered and answered, for he had not learnt how to stop the wish. He ran back to his previously poor brother demanding him to take the coffee mill back. The previously poor brother told him that he can only take the coffee mill back if he paid him the same price that he sold it to him for. The rich brother agreed and the previously poor brother became incredibly rich. He bought his wife a castle by the sea with gold turrets.
Many people visited the castle to see who lived there. One day, a sea captain came to the castle. He was greeted nicely and shown the famous mill. The sea captain said that if he had that mill, he will not have to sail the seas to buy cargoes of salt. The brother was very happy to sell the mill to the sea captain. The sea captain paid such a huge sum of money for the mill and quickly rushed out because he was afraid the brother might change his mind. He did not ask for proper directions. Once the ship was far away from the land, “I wish for salt,” he said to the mill. He turned the handle and the mill began to give him salt and kept giving. The salt filled the ship and the ship cracked under the weight and sank to the bottom. The mill also fell into the sea and is still giving salt because it was never stopped. That is the reason why the sea is salty!
