Victoria Woodhull - First Woman Stockbroker: First Woman to Run for Presidency

Victoria Woodhull had a very hard life at times. She was born into an extremely poor family and spent most of her time as a child earning money to support them. Later in life, she decided that she wanted to run for the United States Presidency. She became to first woman in history to run for that position. Unfortunately, she triggered a huge scandal, today known as the Tilton-Beecher Scandal, costing her not only the election, but also her reputation. She made a public announcement that claimed that Reverend Henry Ward Beecher committed adultery with a parishioner. She was sent to jail on election day, accused of sending vulgar scenes and letters through the mail. Although she was later set free without being found guilty, her public reputation was ruined.

After the scandal blew over, she divorced and remarried two more times. She became the first woman to ever become a stockbroker. However, she became a successful stockbroker just as a stock market crash in the United States was beginning to develop. Luckily, she found a way to sell her shares before the crash was in full swing, therefore making even more money than she had before. She led a quiet life after that until she died in on June 10, 1927 in her manor house in England. Even though she was not the most respected person, her intentions should inspire young women even today.
