Honoring Women Who Fought Their Way to Greatness

Louisa May Alcott - Famous Author

Louisa May Alcott was a very conscientious woman. Even though the life of a writer may seem very uneventful, it is normally not. Louisa May Alcott had to provide everything for her family since her father was a transcendentalist, a profession that brought in very little to no income. To earn money in her spare time, she mended clothing, did laundry, and taught little children. Her mother was busy at home with all of her little siblings and housework, so she could not provide for the family. It was all up to Louisa to hold up the family. During that time, her little sister, Lizzie, died of scarlet fever. Since her other sister, Anna, had gotten married, she stayed with her mother to keep her company. Then, in 1862, she went to Washington, D.C. to serve as a war nurse. There she caught typhoid fever. Luckily, she recovered and used those experiences to inspire some of her books.

Although none of her books won any awards, they were at the top of the best-selling lists for weeks at a time. For example, her book Little Women sold more than 2000 copies the first few days it was on the shelves. Louisa May Alcott's literature masterpieces, like Little Women, will always be treasured.
