Isabella of Spain - Queen of Spain

Isabella, Queen of Spain, went through many difficult times, even as a child. When she was only three years old, her father died. A short time after that while her step-brother and biological brother were fighting for the throne, her little brother Alfonso died from an intentional poisoning. Since she was the only heir left, she was offered the throne, but refused. When she married Ferdinand of Portugal in 1469 without the knowledge of Henry IV, he disinherited her and pronounced his second wife the new heir. After he died, a war broke out because the people in Spain wanted Isabella to be their ruler instead of Juana la Beltraneja. However, Isabella ended up being crowned Queen of Castile and Juana joined a nunnery, a huge accomplishment for Isabella. She was also crowned Queen of Aragon since her husband was crowned king during the war. During her reign, she joined the two nations of Castile and Aragon together and created the country of Spain.

Queen Isabella also had to make the hard decision of whether or not to support Christopher Columbus. Most people did not want to support him, but she believed in him. Thanks to her, we now have the United States, or the "New World" at the time. She was one of the most effective rulers that Spain has ever had. Her supportive style of ruling will be treasured by everyone everywhere.
